It was the second time our son would need surgery and almost the same surgery he had a couple of years ago. As we got the news, these were some of the first thoughts that ran through my mind: “Surgery again? Why? Did the previous doctor not do a good job? Did we not believe enough? But wait a minute. Why am I wasting time doubting myself and others? Our son is in pain and this surgery is needed for him to get better!” I changed my focus and held fast to God’s Word in my mind as I kept moving forward, remembering His faithfulness toward us throughout all the years no matter the circumstances.
The words we have secured in the depth of our heart are what we think and believe and therefore speak. Hebrews 10:23 shows us that as we hold fast to the profession of our faith without wavering, we can see God’s faithfulness manifested in our lives no matter the circumstances.
Hebrews 10:23:
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised.)
Let’s take a closer look at what it means to hold fast to the profession of our faith. “Profession” is from the Greek word homologia, which can be defined as “acknowledgement” or “confession.” The Greek word translated “faith” in this verse could be better understood as “hope.” It is defined as “expectation.” We are to hold fast to the confession of what we hope for, the promises of God we are expecting.
Hold fast to what we confess. There are only two possibilities to confess. Either we are going to hold fast to confessions in the senses realm (which can be on the negative side), or we are going to hold fast to the Word. We saw that this is so true as we prepared for our son’s surgery that day. As a family, we chose to hold fast to God’s Word by remembering His faithfulness!
This verse also tells us to hold fast without wavering. The Greek word translated “without wavering” can be understood as “firm, unmoved.” We are to be firm and unmoved in our confession of what we are believing for! This principle of holding fast without wavering is also called retaining with conviction.
How strong do we want our lives to be if we are under attack from the adversary? How strong a foundation are we going to build upon? The Word of God in our minds will make our lives strong as we act upon it. We can hold fast to God’s Word in our minds, remembering His faithfulness. We retain His Word unwaveringly. As we hold on to our confession, we bring God’s power into the situation by speaking in tongues much and clearly picturing our heart’s desire coming to pass. God is faithful; therefore we can anticipate with eagerness and pleasure the results we are praying for.
The day of the surgery, we encountered a big snowfall as we headed to the hospital. The winds were blowing hard! But we were confident and at peace, holding fast to the results we had prayed for. No matter the circumstances, we anticipated with eagerness and pleasure our heart’s desire coming to pass. We arrived safely and on time to the hospital.
I Thessalonians 5:24 [The Amplified Bible (1987)]:
Faithful is He Who is calling you [to Himself] and utterly trustworthy, and He will also do it [fulfill His call by hallowing and keeping you].
We’ve seen this verse as a reality in our family. We teach our kids to see God’s faithfulness in their lives every day. Our son had his surgery with the best doctor and hospital available. He recovered well, as expected! We can unquestionably rely upon and trust in our faithful God and His faithful Word.
Let’s hold fast to the confession of the Word in our hearts regardless of the circumstances that could be surrounding us. Let’s have no doubt that in any situation we face, we will see God’s faithfulness from start to finish as we keep doing His Word. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is always worth trusting in because His faithfulness never sways due to circumstances!
