God shows us in His Word the importance of light, both physical and spiritual light. In the first chapter of Genesis, when God was restoring the earth, the first thing He spoke into being was light.
Genesis 1:3:
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And if we look at the end of the Bible, God also revealed truths regarding light. This verse in Revelation is in reference to the new heaven and the new earth.
Revelation 22:5:
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
All that God has ever done and ever will do between Genesis 1:3 and Revelation 22:5 is to make His light available to man. Why? Because God is Light.
I John 1:5:
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
God is Light, and for anyone to have spiritual light, he must have a relationship with God. If God is Light, then so is His Word.
Psalms 119:105:
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
The light of God’s Word makes known God Who is Light. Without the light of God’s Word, how can people know God?
II Corinthians 4:6:
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ [through the work that Jesus Christ did].
Jesus Christ is the light; he was God’s Word in the flesh.
John 8:12:
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
When God’s children live God’s Word and witness to it, we are the light of the world. When we walk in the light so it can be seen by others, they too can glorify our heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:16:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
God’s Word gives light. That Word enables men and women to be born again of God’s spirit and be filled with the holy spirit. That Word enables believers to walk with His power and might. So we shine as lights in this world—we hold forth that Word of God, which gives light and life.
Philippians 2:13,15,16:
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation [age], among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
Holding forth the word of life….
Let’s shine forth in this world by speaking God’s Word and drawing people to the Light of God. We shine as lights!
