We can build faithfulness at reading and studying God’s Word on a daily basis. As we do this, it will enhance our relationship with our heavenly Father, and it will help us to be fully equipped to live abundantly in this life. God makes it very clear to us that reading and studying His Word is important. When we understand the importance of reading and studying God’s Word, we make the time to faithfully incorporate this practice into our daily lives.
I Timothy 4:13:
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
To “give attendance” is to devote thought and effort to. What is it that believers are to be devoted to and spend time doing? We are to spend time reading God’s Word! Without reading God’s Word, it’s difficult to gain an accurate knowledge of what God’s will is. We can all know God’s will for us as we make the effort to spend time in His Word. Being in the Word daily, faithfully, is something we can work at over and over again until it becomes a part of who we are, a part of the very fabric of our lives. When I think of being faithful, I think of being constant, reliable, and steadfast. This is how we endeavor to build reading God’s Word in our lives.
God’s will is for us to not only read His Word faithfully, but to study it as well.
II Timothy 2:15:
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
“Study” in this verse means “to expend a diligent effort, remembering the brevity of time.” In other words, God is exhorting us to exert an effort earnestly, diligently, and faithfully, utilizing our time wisely. This is how we should read and study God’s Word. It is something that requires building faithfulness and making an earnest effort on our part, and it’s not without its benefits.
One benefit to faithfully spending time in the Word is that it helps us to develop a sweet relationship with our heavenly Father, the Creator of the heavens and the earth!
II Peter 1:3:
According as his [God’s] divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.
“Godliness” can be understood as having a true and vital spiritual relationship with God. This is a personal and intimate relationship and is available to us through the knowledge of Him in His Word. As we faithfully spend time with God by reading and studying His Word, we will learn more about Who He is and what He wants and desires for us, His children.
Another benefit of building faithfulness in reading and studying God’s Word is that it fully equips us for an abundant and blessed life.
II Timothy 3:16,17:
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect [equipped, outfitted], throughly furnished unto all good works.
God wants us fully outfitted with everything we need for our journey through life. God doesn’t want us to lack anything. He never wants His children to ever face a challenge in life and not have an answer of peace and encouragement. Knowing what God can and will do for us gives us confidence, courage, and strength.
God had His will and heart written down for us to read and study it! Our faithful investment in reading and studying His Word can determine what kind of relationship we will have with Him and can fully equip us to live abundantly. God wants us to know Him, and He wants us to have everything we need to overcome any challenge we may face. This takes a commitment of time and effort to faithfully read and study His Word and to build it into our daily lives. Let’s make that diligent effort so our fellowship with God becomes sweeter every day.
