Since the beginning of time, God has never ever failed to provide abundantly for His people; therefore they can put their trust in Him. In the Grace Administration that we live in today, we can still go to the promises in God’s Word with complete reliance that He will always fulfill them.
He will not fail us nor forsake us. Let’s look at what Moses told God’s people to prepare them for entering the Promised Land. He was speaking for God.
Deuteronomy 31:6,8:
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
These scriptures were an exhortation to Israel before Joshua led them into the Promised Land. What encouraging words for them to hear: “the Lord thy God…doth go with thee…will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” He will “go before thee…be with thee…not fail thee, neither forsake thee.”
Do you think Moses was trying to make a point here? He was reassuring them that God had them covered in every situation that they could encounter as they went in to claim the Promised Land. God’s people were exhorted to “be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them [the unbelievers in the Promised Land].” They were to “fear not, neither be dismayed.” God would do His part to provide, protect, and not fail them; and Israel had to do their part, believing that what God had promised, He would absolutely perform.
That reminds me of something God said about Abraham (“the father of all them that believe”) in Romans 4.
Romans 4:20,21:
He [Abraham] staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith [believing], giving glory to God;
And being fully persuaded that, what he [God] had promised, he [God] was able also to perform.
In contrast to God, in Whom we can totally trust because we know that He will never fail us, there are categories of life that are not worthy of our trust. Let’s look at four specific things that the Word of God warns us to not rely on, because they will fail us: riches, weapons, man, and ourselves.
Proverbs 11:28:
He that trusteth IN HIS RICHES shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
Psalms 44:6,7:
For I will not trust IN MY BOW, neither shall MY SWORD save me.
But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
Psalms 118:8:
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence IN MAN.
II Corinthians 1:9:
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust IN OURSELVES, but in God which raiseth the dead.
God makes it very clear that we are not to put our trust—our reliance—in uncertain riches, in weapons or military force, in man, or in ourselves. Only the true God can and will always provide complete protection and provisions for us all the time and in every situation.
In life’s various challenges and in the myriad situations that we encounter, God is the only One we can always count on to never fail us. His promises are yea and amen (II Corinthians 1:20). What He has promised, He will perform.
As God’s children, let’s go to God’s Word and find those promises that confirm His willingness and ability to always provide for us abundantly in every situation. He will never fail us as we trust in Him and nothing else.
