Let’s Get to Know Our God!

Let’s Get to Know Our God!

Someone’s name can say a lot about them and so can someone’s title. Just by hearing “Dr. Ken Stevens,” we know “Doctor” is Ken Stevens’s title. We start to get to know who he is. We know he had the faithfulness and perseverance to study for many years.

The titles and attributes God gives Himself in His Word are one way that He lets us know Who He is. To accurately know God, we must go to His Word and see what it says about Him. God wants us to know Him so that we can benefit from all He has made available to us, His sons and daughters. We can build that knowledge by having a purposeful plan to study the different attributes and titles of God. The more we know God and Who He is, the more we can trust Him (Psalm 9:10).

In order to trust God, we must see what He says about Who He is. The best way to know the titles and attributes that God has given Himself is to study His Word.

II Timothy 2:15:
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This verse tells us how we are to study the Word. The word “study” is the Greek word spoudazō. E. W. Bullinger defines that word as “to speed, make haste, (as manifested in diligence, earnestness, zeal, etc.).” What are we to be diligent, earnest, and have zeal toward? Showing ourselves approved unto God by rightly dividing the Word of Truth. We study God’s Word!

A great way to know the titles and attributes of God is to develop a study plan. There are articles covering many of the titles of God in The Way Magazine. We can also use concordances or Bible programs (like e-Sword) to look up phrases such as “God is,” “God is not,” “the Lord is,” “the Lord shall,” “the Lord will be.” As we see what God says about Himself in His Word and as we learn about Who He is, we can have greater confidence and trust in Him.

Here is a list to help start your study of Who God is.
Our God Is Able (II Corinthians 9:8; Ephesians 3:20)
Our God Is Ever Present as Our Helper (Joshua 1:9; Hebrews 13:5,6)
Our God Is Faithful to Perform His Word (I Thessalonians 5:24; Hebrews 10:23)
Our God Is Good, Ready to Forgive, Plenteous and Rich in Mercy (Psalm 86:5; Ephesians 2:4)
Our God Is Gracious (Psalm 116:5)
Our God Is the Lord That Heals (Exodus 15:26)
Our God Is Love (I John 4:16)
Our God Is Our Rock, Our Fortress, Our Deliverer (Psalm 18:2)
Our God Is Spirit (John 4:24)
Our God Is One God (I Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 4:6)

Without studying the Word of God, we leave our understanding of God to hearsay, which is not reliable. To know Who God is, we must go to His Word and allow it to tell us Who He is! By making a study plan and studying the different attributes and titles of God, we will build our understanding. The more we know Who God is, the more we can trust in Him wholeheartedly.
