When we were born to our earthly parents as physical, body-soul human beings, we did not have to know how to be born. However, to become born again of God’s spirit and become three-part beings of body, soul, and spirit, we must know how to receive what God has made available.
Why do we need to get born again?
I Corinthians 2:14:
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Natural men and women of only body and soul cannot know the wonderful, spiritual things God wants them to know. One must be born again and become complete—body, soul, and spirit—to understand the knowledge of God and have his or her understanding enlightened.
Ephesians 1:18:
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened [or “flooded with light,” as The Amplified Bible reads]; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.
As born-again children of God, we have access to Him. We have the ability to know His will for our lives and to have our understanding flooded with the light of His Word.
In order to be born again, we must first hear the Word of God.
Romans 10:17:
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
We must hear the Word of God to be able to receive the faith of Jesus Christ. Through the accomplishments of Jesus Christ, this faith was made available on the day of Pentecost when all God had promised regarding our redeemer was fulfilled.
Galatians 3:22:
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
Faith was made available through the accomplished works of Jesus Christ and is spiritual. The natural man of body and soul cannot have faith, but he can believe. Because the natural man can believe, he can receive the promise of the new birth laid out in Romans.
Romans 10:9,10:
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Salvation—the new birth—requires that we do two things: confess Jesus as lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead. We do not have to confess Jesus as a great man or even as a prophet among prophets. Romans 10:9 also does not say that we must confess our sins to be born again of God’s spirit. We confess Jesus as lord in our lives.
In addition to confessing Jesus as lord, we believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead. We believe with all our heart (in the depth of our being) that God raised Jesus from the dead to die no more.
The moment we confess and believe as instructed in Romans 10:9, we are born again of God’s spirit. We become children of God with incorruptible seed within.
I Peter 1:23:
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
We receive God’s incorruptible seed, the gift of holy spirit.
To know the wonderful, spiritual things God wants us to know, we must be born again of His spirit. To do this takes hearing God’s matchless Word. Upon hearing the Word of God, we confess Jesus as lord and believe in the heart of our heart that God raised him from the dead. Then, we are born again! We are God’s sons and daughters with incorruptible seed; we are three-part beings of body, soul, and spirit.
